A Chief Correctional Assistant with the Nigerian Correctional Service in Zamfara State, Abdullahi Nura, attempted suicide on Wednesday by jumping into the Gusau Dam but was rescued in time.
According to a statement issued by the Zamfara State Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC I Mustapha Abubakar, the incident occurred shortly after Nura reported for duty at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Gusau.
The officer reportedly hired a commercial motorcyclist who transported him to the Gusau Dam — the largest and deepest water body in the metropolis. Upon arrival, Nura jumped into the water in what officials have described as a suicide attempt “for reasons best known to him.”

The alert motorcyclist quickly informed dam security personnel and staff, who responded swiftly and pulled the officer from the water.
Nura was found wearing his full service uniform and carrying his official ID card. The Nigerian Correctional Service headquarters in Zamfara was immediately notified, and the State Controller of Corrections, CCS Musa Tanko, dispatched a team to evacuate the officer.
He was taken to the Medium Security Custodial Centre’s medical clinic, where he is currently receiving treatment. Authorities confirmed that he has since regained consciousness and is responding positively.
The service has yet to provide further details on the motive behind the suicide attempt, and investigations are ongoing.
