Prominent Indian industrialist and polo enthusiast, Sunjay Kapur, has died at the age of 53 after suffering a fatal heart attack triggered by a bee sting during a polo match in England.

According to a report by The Mirror, Kapur was stung on the mouth, which led to a severe allergic reaction and cardiac arrest. The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, June 12, sending shockwaves through both British polo circles and India’s corporate and high society communities.

Medical experts say that stings to internal areas like the mouth are especially dangerous due to the risk of rapid swelling, airway obstruction, and sharp drops in blood pressure.

Kapur was the Chairman of Sona Comstar, a leading auto components manufacturer, and the former husband of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor. A well-known figure in India’s business and social scenes, he was educated in the UK and frequently participated in elite polo events alongside members of the British royal family, including Prince William.

Ironically, just hours before his own death, Kapur had posted a message of condolence on X (formerly Twitter) in response to the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. “Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected. May they find strength in this difficult hour,” he wrote.

Tributes have since poured in for the late businessman. Author and actor Suhel Seth expressed his grief on social media, stating, “Deeply saddened at the passing of @sunjaykapur: he passed away earlier today in England. A terrible loss and deepest condolences to his family and to his colleagues.”

In a statement, Sona Comstar mourned their chairman’s sudden passing: “We are deeply saddened by the sudden demise of our Chairman, Mr. Sunjay Kapur. He was a visionary leader whose passion, insight and dedication shaped the identity and success of our company.”

Kapur’s untimely death marks a significant loss to the global business and polo communities.
