Justice Halilu Yusuf of the Federal Capital Territory High Court on Monday granted ₦2 billion bail to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

The bail followed Emefiele’s arraignment on an eight-count charge, which includes allegations of unlawfully acquiring a 753-unit housing estate and illegally controlling billions of naira through proxy accounts.

In his ruling, Justice Yusuf noted that Emefiele had previously been granted bail in three separate criminal cases and had not breached any of those bail conditions.

He then granted bail on the condition that Emefiele must present two sureties, each of whom must own property valued at ₦2 billion within Asokoro, Maitama, or Wuse 2—areas under the court’s jurisdiction.

Additionally, the judge ordered Emefiele to surrender his travel documents and directed that the bail must be perfected by Wednesday, or he would be remanded in custody.

The ruling came after Emefiele’s lawyer, Matthew Burkaa, moved the bail application, which was not opposed by prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, who only requested that the court impose stricter conditions than those set by other courts.
