The Presidency on Saturday night debunked reports claiming that former Benue State Governor, Senator George Akume, had stepped down as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to assume the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement issued by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency clarified that “there has been no change in the status” of Akume, who remains SGF.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, currently in Saint Lucia, has not made any new appointments. The information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue,” the statement read.

Speculation about Akume’s purported resignation followed the official exit of former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, as APC National Chairman on Friday, June 27, 2025.

Ganduje’s resignation paved the way for the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, to step in as Acting National Chairman.

While APC spokesperson Felix Morka said Ganduje stepped down to focus on urgent personal matters, sources within the party suggest he was pressured to resign due to mounting internal opposition. Critics had long viewed his appointment as a breach of the APC’s internal zoning agreement.

Dalori, who hails from the North East, is expected to serve in an acting capacity until the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) convenes to formally fill the leadership vacancy.

Ganduje, from the North West, had taken over the party leadership in August 2023 following the resignation of Abdullahi Adamu, a former chairman from the North Central zone. He served as Kano State governor from May 2015 to May 2023 and was appointed Board Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) by President Tinubu in January 2025.
