The United States Mission in Nigeria has clarified that the recent reduction in visa validity for most Nigerian nonimmigrant travellers is part of a broader global review focused on security and technical standards — not a political move.

In a statement posted on Facebook on Friday, the mission addressed circulating rumours, stating that the decision is unrelated to Nigeria’s association with BRICS, its stance on third-country deportees, or the adoption of e-visa systems.

“This reduction is not the result of any nation’s stance on third-country deportees, introduction of e-visa policies, or affiliations with groups like BRICS,” the statement noted.

Instead, the U.S. explained that the revised visa validity is part of “an ongoing global review of the use of U.S. visas by other countries using technical and security benchmarks to safeguard U.S. immigration systems.”

The embassy reaffirmed its commitment to bilateral cooperation with Nigeria and expressed willingness to work with Nigerian authorities to meet the necessary criteria.

“We value our longstanding partnership with Nigeria and remain committed to working closely with the Nigerian public and government officials to help them meet those criteria and benchmarks,” it said.

According to the mission, the goal is to ensure “safe, lawful, and mutually beneficial travel between our nations.”
