The 2023 Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has announced his resignation from the Labour Party and declared his intention to join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

Baba-Ahmed made the announcement on Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he said his exit from the Labour Party would take effect immediately.

He explained that his decision was driven by internal disagreements within the party, a departure from its founding ideals, and what he described as interference in opposition politics.

“They redeployed someone to come with a specific purpose… to make life difficult, particularly for me. But what Labour Party stood for then is no longer what it is today,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed, who ran alongside Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of focusing on weakening opposition parties rather than governance.

“We have had a government who has made its primary purpose the destruction of other political parties… instead of fighting insecurity and fixing our economy,” he said.

He confirmed that he is moving to the PRP, describing it as a party with a long political history.

“I’m leaving Labour Party midnight tonight, and I’m joining PRP. PRP is the new destination… it’s about 75 years old,” he stated.

Baba-Ahmed added that he intends to support efforts within the PRP to produce what he described as a “genuine southern, possibly Christian candidate” ahead of the 2027 elections.

On his future political ambition, he declined to confirm a presidential bid but said he was content with his past achievements, noting his record in politics, education initiatives, and healthcare investments.
