Tributes have continued to pour in from across the globe following the death of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday at the age of 82.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu confirmed the passing of his predecessor and ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast in honour of the former military and civilian leader, whose life was marked by discipline, public service, and a commitment to national unity.

The United States Mission in Nigeria, in a statement posted on X, extended condolences to the Nigerian people, describing Buhari as “a leader whose life was defined by service, discipline, and a commitment to restore integrity to public office.”

“His legacy includes his efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and all Nigerians who mourn this loss,” the statement read.

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria also paid tribute, stating: “We mourn a resolute leader whose unwavering dedication to Nigeria’s unity and progress leaves an enduring legacy. His pivotal contributions to advancing China-Nigeria relations will forever remain etched in our shared history.”

From East Africa, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali offered condolences on behalf of his nation, writing on his official X handle: “I extend sincere condolences to the family of former President Muhammadu Buhari and to the people and Government of Nigeria. Our thoughts are with you during this time of mourning.”

Sierra Leone’s President and current ECOWAS chairman, Julius Maada Bio, also joined in mourning the late statesman.

“On behalf of the people of the Republic of Sierra Leone, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to his family, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and to the people of Nigeria during this incredibly difficult time. This is truly a devastating loss,” he stated.

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed sorrow over the loss of a fellow statesman, describing Buhari as “a cool patriot” who fulfilled his duties as a soldier, administrator, and leader.

“At a time like this, we need the totality of the experience and statesmanship of all those who have had opportunities to run the affairs of this country. He will be surely missed,” Obasanjo said.

Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, expressed shock and sadness at Buhari’s passing.

“Unbelievable! I did not know just how ill HE President Buhari was… I have just learned that he passed away. I am so very sad. May the Soul of HE @MBuhari rest in perfect peace,” she posted.
