Former presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, has defended the decision of the late President Muhammadu Buhari to seek medical treatment abroad, stating that he “could have been long dead” had he relied on Nigerian hospitals.

Adesina made the remarks on Tuesday during a special Channels Television broadcast covering Buhari’s funeral monitored by Hotjist reporter. He responded to critics questioning why the former president died in a London hospital rather than in Nigeria.

According to Adesina, Buhari had been receiving medical care in the United Kingdom long before he assumed office in May 2015, and the UK doctors were already well-acquainted with his medical history.

“He had been going there for years. The doctors knew his medical record and he trusted them. If he had suddenly switched to an unfamiliar system here, he might not have survived as long as he did,” Adesina said.

He also noted that many Nigerian hospitals still lack the necessary equipment and specialised expertise for the type of care Buhari required.

The late president passed away in a London hospital on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a prolonged illness. His body was flown back to Nigeria on Tuesday for a state burial in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
