In a bold move to tackle the persistent menace of one-way traffic violations, the Lagos State Government has directed that 18 motorists apprehended for driving against traffic flow undergo mandatory psychiatric evaluation.

This directive, issued through the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), forms part of a broader strategy to restore road discipline, enhance public safety, and instill lawful conduct among road users in the state.

According to a statement by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, 12 of the offenders are already set to be arraigned, with psychiatric assessments forming a key part of their prosecution process.

Speaking on the development, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized that the measure is not intended to stigmatize the offenders but to serve as a rehabilitative and deterrent mechanism. “The enforcement of psychiatric assessments is not meant to punish but to protect the motoring public from individuals who demonstrate a reckless disregard for human life and lawful order,” he said.

The decision aligns with international best practices in traffic psychology and behavioral regulation, Mr. Bakare-Oki noted, adding that such assessments will help determine the cognitive fitness and behavioral disposition of the violators.

Despite ongoing public enlightenment campaigns, Lagos continues to experience widespread disregard for traffic laws, leading to fatal road accidents, gridlock, and the rapid degradation of road infrastructure. The government insists it will no longer tolerate such lawlessness.

“This initiative goes beyond enforcement it’s a moral and civic duty. The goal is to foster responsible driving behavior, safeguard lives, and maintain order on Lagos roads,” Bakare-Oki stated.

LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to rule of law, public sensitization, and infrastructural integrity. Residents and road users are strongly advised to comply with all traffic regulations and contribute to building a safer and more efficient Lagos.

For urgent traffic-related issues, the public is encouraged to contact LASTMA via its toll-free hotline: 080000527862.
