Two Israeli soldiers were killed on Sunday during combat operations in southern Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed, bringing the military’s total death toll in the ongoing ground offensive to 462.

The soldiers, aged 20 and 22, were members of the elite Golani Infantry Brigade’s 51st Battalion. According to Israeli military sources, they died when their armoured vehicle exploded in the city of Khan Yunis.

Military correspondents from various Israeli media outlets reported that the blast was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED), allegedly detonated by a militant who emerged from a Hamas tunnel. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances.

Defence Minister Israel Katz mourned the loss of the soldiers in a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We have lost three young heroes, some of our finest, who gave their lives for the security of our state and the return of all our hostages.”

The IDF also confirmed on Saturday that another soldier had died from wounds sustained earlier in the week.

Israel’s military campaign in Gaza began following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, which claimed the lives of 1,219 people in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

In retaliation, the Israeli offensive has led to the deaths of at least 59,733 Palestinians predominantly civilians according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.
