A young man identified as Prosper has died during an alleged cult initiation exercise in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, was reportedly linked to the Aye confraternity group. According to sources, Prosper had expressed interest in joining the group and approached a family member, identified as Cosmos, for assistance.

Cosmos, believed to be a senior member of the cult, allegedly connected Prosper with other members who took him to the initiation venue, although he did not attend the event himself.

Tragedy struck during the initiation rites when Prosper reportedly collapsed due to repeated physical drills and was rushed to a hospital in Jattu, where he was confirmed dead.

Spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident on Monday in Benin, stating that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the death.

“The deceased slumped during the initiation and was taken to a hospital where he was confirmed dead,” Yamu said. “The suspect is currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing.”

The police have assured the public of a thorough investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
