The administration of Ibom Air announced on Monday that the airline did not disseminate the widely circulated footage depicting a passenger being forcibly removed from an aircraft in the nude.

The Group Manager of Marketing and Communications at Ibom Air, Aniekan Essienette, conveyed this information in reaction to the uproar that has captivated social media regarding the incident.

In an interview on Monday, Ms. Essienette stated that although the video was captured onboard the aircraft, it was neither recorded nor distributed by Ibom Air personnel.

“The video was recorded on the plane, but there were several people on board who were not Ibom Air employees. Anyone could have taken it,” she said.

I can affirm unequivocally that Ibom Air did not distribute the video. We do not endorse such inappropriate exposure, and it is regrettable that the video has become widespread.

The incident took place on 10 August after the passenger allegedly refused to switch off her electronic device in defiance of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) safety regulations mandating total device shutdown during flight.

The Ibom Air representative stated that the pilot-in-command was required to contact security after the passenger refused to exit, prompting the crew to restrain her to guarantee a secure removal.

“Our team had to restrain her to ensure that security could escort her from the aircraft,” she clarified.

The action occurred amid an escalating surge of public indignation regarding the event, which has ignited discussions concerning passenger rights, airline behavior, and aviation safety in Nigeria.

The video’s widespread circulation has drawn condemnation from many Nigerians, who described the passenger’s treatment as humiliating and degrading.

Despite the backlash, Ms Essienette defended the airline’s position, underscoring Ibom Air’s commitment to customer service and safety.

“Ibom Air values our customers and prides itself on reliability and excellent service. We remain committed to these principles,” she said.

She encouraged travelers to adhere to aviation regulations, emphasizing that “the majority of individuals comply with the directive to deactivate devices. The airline setting is regulated, and safety must take precedence. ”
