The attorney general for the U. S. capital, Washington, has initiated legal action against Donald Trump’s administration regarding what he termed a “hostile acquisition” of the city’s police department, which the Republican president asserted was essential to combat violent crime.

Earlier this week, Trump placed the capital’s Metropolitan Police under federal oversight while also deploying the National Guard onto the city’s streets. Subsequently, Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a directive to appoint a selected individual as interim police commissioner.

Federal law governing the capital “does not authorize this brazen usurpation of the District’s authority over its own government,” Attorney General Brian Schwalb wrote in a filing lodged in federal court.

Schwalb has requested an immediate suspension of Bondi’s directive.

The government’s actions “exceed the parameters of the President’s restricted authority and instead aim for an aggressive takeover of MPD,” Schwalb stated in a declaration on social media.

“This represents an insult to the dignity and independence of the 700,000 Americans who reside in DC.”

In contrast to the 50 states, Washington functions under a distinctive relationship with the federal government that constrains its independence and grants Congress exceptional influence over local affairs.

Since the mid-1970s, the Home Rule Act has permitted residents to elect a mayor and a city council, although Congress still exerts control over the city’s budget.

The predominantly Democratic city is facing accusations from Republican officials that it is overwhelmed by crime, beset by homelessness, and mismanaged financially.

However, data from Washington police indicate considerable reductions in violent crime between 2023 and 2024, although this follows a surge in incidents post-pandemic.
