The governments of Osun, Oyo, and Ogun states have declared Wednesday, August 20, a public holiday in observance of the annual Isese Festival.

In Osun, the announcement was made through a statement released on Monday by AbdulRasheed Aderibigbe, Commissioner for the Ministry of Home Affairs, Osogbo.

He explained that the holiday is meant to allow traditionalists to fully partake in the cultural and spiritual activities of the festival.

“Osun State Government is pleased to announce that Wednesday, August 20th 2025 will be observed as a Public Holiday to enable Traditional Religion Worshippers throughout the State to participate in the 2025 celebration of Isese Festival,” the statement read.

“This decision according to His Excellency reflects government commitment to recognizing and honouring the cultural heritage and traditions of the people of the State and promote cultural awareness and unity among the people.”

“Consequently, the Executive Governor of Osun State Senator (Dr.) Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke felicitates with the faithful of traditional religion worshippers and extends his best wishes to them for a joyous and memorable Isese Festival.”

In Ogun State, the government also confirmed the holiday in a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, stressing that it reflects the state’s recognition of the cultural and spiritual values of Yoruba heritage.

“Isese Day serves as an opportunity for adherents of the Yoruba religion to honour their ancestors, engage in traditional practices, and promote the values and teachings inherent in their spiritual beliefs,” the statement read.

Similarly, Oyo State declared the day work-free in a circular signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo, dated August 18, 2025.

According to the circular, Governor Seyi Makinde approved the holiday in line with the state’s recognition of the annual festival.

“His Excellency requests that the occasion be used to pray for the peace, unity, and stability of the state in particular and the country in general,” the statement said.

Earlier, Lagos State had also declared August 20 a public holiday for Isese Day.

Isese, a Yoruba word meaning tradition or ancestral ways, refers in the cultural and religious sense to the indigenous Yoruba religion and practices, encompassing rituals, beliefs, and moral codes passed down through generations.
