NERC URGES CONSUMERS TO REPORT DISCOs DEMANDING PAYMENT FOR TRANSFORMERS

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has encouraged electricity consumers in Anambra State to report any requests from officials of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for the procurement of transformers, cables, or poles.
During a town hall meeting in Awka, NERC’s Commissioner for Stakeholders Management, Hajiya Aisha Mohammed, represented by the Head of Consumer Protection, Dr. Zubairu Babatunde, underscored that such items constitute investments of the distribution companies and should not be the burden of consumers.
She stated that instances of such occurrences should be recorded and submitted to NERC for immediate action.
“NERC oversees the operations of the distribution companies and guarantees that customers are not disadvantaged. If consumers are unhappy with services, they should express their grievances through the appropriate channels. We are also here to heed your concerns and facilitate direct responses from the DISCOS,” Mohammed articulated.
Topics addressed at the meeting encompassed metering, billing, electricity supply, and service standards. NERC officials, who will be present in the state for three days, also monitored the distribution of prepaid meters during the initiative. Consumers were assured they would receive their meters within this timeframe.
Dr. Idika Okechukwu, Chief Information Officer of EEDC, representing the company’s Managing Director, stated that a meter laboratory has been established in Onitsha to expedite installations. He assured that any consumer who purchases a meter would have it installed within 72 hours.
Okechukwu further noted that 750,000 of the 1,365,400 electricity consumers in Anambra State have been metered, and the company remains dedicated to adhering to NERC’s metering standards.
He additionally revealed that EEDC plans to implement an offline bill payment system before the end of the month to facilitate easier payment for customers.
