The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has monitored 1,440 government-funded initiatives throughout Nigeria’s North-West and North-East regions, valued at over ₦271 billion, as part of its constituency and executive project oversight program.

During a press briefing in Kano, the ICPC Chairman disclosed that 767 of the projects were situated in the North-West, totaling ₦112 billion, whereas 673 projects in the North-East represented a greater value of ₦158 billion.
“Our monitoring efforts are producing concrete outcomes. We have not only overseen the execution of these projects but also reclaimed substantial sums in both cash and assets,” the chairman stated.

According to the Commission, ₦7.269 billion in cash was retrieved from the North-West, along with $1.066 million in foreign currency. In the North-East, ₦43.335 million was recovered. Additionally, 14 properties, 25 plots of land, and three farmlands were confiscated in the North-West during the initiative.

The ICPC Chairman recognized the media’s role in holding public officials accountable.
“We commend journalists who have consistently highlighted abandoned or poorly executed intervention projects. Your diligence ensures that public resources reach their intended beneficiaries,” he remarked.
Regarding enforcement actions, the Commission reported that it investigated 171 cases during the specified period—117 from the North-West and 54 from the North-East. These investigations resulted in 16 legal cases and eight convictions.
“These statistics are not merely figures; they signify our persistent efforts to combat corruption and promote transparency in public service delivery,” the Chairman added.

The ICPC’s project oversight initiative aims to ensure that government-funded projects, particularly those in marginalized or underserved communities, are thoroughly executed and fulfill their intended goals. The Commission indicates that project tracking will extend across additional regions, with greater collaboration from civil society and citizens anticipated in future phases.
