The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has verified that Arise News correspondent Somtochukwu Maduagwu passed away after leaping from the uppermost floor of her Katampe residence during an armed robbery on Monday, September 29, 2025.
This statement follows earlier claims indicating that the journalist’s demise was associated with purported hospital negligence after she was transported to Maitama General Hospital.
In a conversation with Arise News on Wednesday, confirming the incident, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, mentioned that officers discovered Maduagwu unconscious at the location and expedited her to the hospital.
“Law enforcement officials arrived at the scene and discovered her lying unconscious. She was promptly taken to Maitama General Hospital, where medical personnel attempted to revive her through CPR, but regrettably, she was unable to survive,” Adewale stated.
Commenting on the occurrence, Adewale elaborated that the assailants invaded Unique Apartment, a three-story twin structure comprising 18 units, situated in the Gishiri area of Katampe, under the Mabushi Divisional Area.
“The FCT Command once again expresses condolences to the family of Sommie, the Arise News family, and Nigerians profoundly affected by this distressing and tragic event,” Adewale remarked.
“Some unidentified armed robbers breached Unique Apartments, where Sommie resided. Two private security personnel were on duty, one of whom bravely confronted the assailants and sustained a gunshot wound. FCT Command once again commiserates with the family of Sommie, the Arise News family, and Nigerians deeply touched by this ugly and disturbing incident,” Adewale said.
“Some unknown armed robbers gained access into Unique Apartments where Sommie lived. Two private security guards were on duty. One of them, who had the courage to challenge the robbers, sustained a gunshot injury.
“In the panic that followed, Sommie, who lived on the topmost floor of the building, jumped down from the third storey. The consequences were tragic and very unfortunate.”
Adewale indicated that an investigative team, headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation), has been established to pursue the attackers, assuring that “every effort will be made to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable. ”
“We have set up a specific investigation team headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Investigation, with all tactical units involved to track down the culprits. The leads we are getting are already being worked on, and no stone will be left unturned until the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
The media had previously reported that Maduagwu succumbed to injuries sustained during a robbery assault late Monday night at her home in Abuja. Arise News officially confirmed her death on Tuesday, September 30, expressing profound grief over the loss and attributing it to alleged medical negligence.
The tragedy has elicited nationwide responses. The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) and numerous journalists have denounced the incident, citing escalating insecurity and purported irresponsibility by emergency medical staff.
Notable figures, including President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, have expressed their condolences for the late journalist and called for accountability.
