The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested five youths for allegedly conducting an illegal marriage ceremony without parental consent.

The Deputy Commander General of the board, Mujahideen Aminuddeen, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Monday in Kano.

According to him, those apprehended include the groom, the bride, and three other individuals who acted as representatives and a witness during the ceremony.

He explained that the marriage was allegedly contracted with a dowry of ₦10,000 — an amount said to be below the minimum threshold recognised under Islamic legal standards. Aminuddeen stressed that the union violated both Islamic and legal marital procedures, prompting the board to launch a formal investigation into the incident.

He also urged parents to pay closer attention to their children’s social activities and to provide proper guidance on matters of marriage.

This development comes shortly after the Kano State Government directed the Hisbah Board to commence preparations for a mass wedding programme involving no fewer than 2,000 couples. Aminuddeen had earlier announced that all intending couples under the programme are required to register and undergo compulsory medical screening to ascertain their health status.
