The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed reports claiming it has restricted senior secondary school students from choosing certain subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

In a statement issued by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, WAEC described the viral reports as false and misleading, stressing that no directive was issued to schools or students regarding subject combinations for next year’s examination.

Adeshina clarified that WAEC does not determine or modify school curricula, as that responsibility lies solely with the Federal Government through relevant education agencies. She explained that the council’s role is to assess students based on the curriculum already approved by the government, not to impose restrictions on subjects.

“The attention of the West African Examinations Council has been drawn to misleading information suggesting that it directed schools to limit students’ subject choices. This is completely untrue,” Adeshina stated.

“WAEC operates strictly within the legal and operational frameworks of the Nigerian education system. We have not issued any directive restricting candidates’ subject choices for the 2026 WASSCE.”

She urged schools, parents, and candidates to disregard unverified reports and rely only on official communication channels of the council for accurate information.

The clarification followed public concern after false claims circulated online alleging that WAEC had limited the number of subjects students in arts and science streams could register for in the forthcoming examination.

Adeshina reaffirmed the council’s commitment to transparency, professionalism, and fairness in its examination processes, assuring that all candidates would be assessed in line with approved national standards.

“We remain dedicated to upholding excellence and integrity in our operations while ensuring that all candidates have equal opportunities to excel,” she added.

WAEC advised schools to always verify any new information through its official website or regional offices before making changes to academic or registration procedures.
