Media entrepreneur and publisher of Ovation International, Dele Momodu, has joined growing voices calling for the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Momodu described Kanu’s continued detention as politically motivated, stressing that it reflects longstanding grievances and feelings of marginalisation among people of the South-East.

In a statement shared on his social media platforms, the veteran journalist urged the Federal Government to embrace dialogue and fairness rather than repression in dealing with agitations for self-determination.

“It’s time to address the source of the unrest, not just its symptoms,” Momodu said, adding that the government must recognise the deep-seated issues of equity and justice that have fuelled tensions in the region.

Momodu’s comments come amid renewed appeals from political, religious, and civil society leaders for Kanu’s unconditional release, with many insisting that his freedom would help douse tensions and foster peace in the South-East.

The IPOB leader is currently standing trial on charges bordering on terrorism and other related offences before the Federal High Court in Abuja — charges he has repeatedly denied.

Human rights organisations and several Igbo socio-political groups have also urged the government to comply with previous court rulings ordering Kanu’s release and to explore peaceful means of resolving regional grievances.

Momodu maintained that continued detention and prosecution would only deepen mistrust and alienation among Nigerians, warning that “true national unity cannot be built on injustice or exclusion.”

The Federal Government has yet to respond to Momodu’s remarks, but the renewed wave of advocacy for Kanu’s release appears to be gaining momentum ahead of his next court appearance.
