WAEC DISOWNS REPORTS ON SUBJECT DIRECTIVE FOR 2026 WASSCE CANDIDATES

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed reports claiming it directed senior secondary students to offer specific subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
In a statement issued by Moyosola Adeshina, Acting Head of Public Affairs, WAEC, the council described the reports as false and misleading, urging the public to disregard them.
“We wish to categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject,” Adeshina stated.
According to the council, the development and regulation of school curricula in Nigeria remain the responsibility of the federal government, while WAEC’s role is limited to implementing existing educational policies through examination and assessment.
“The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the federal government. WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country,” Adeshina explained.
She assured candidates and stakeholders of the council’s continued commitment to professionalism, fairness, and excellence, noting that all students sitting for the 2026 WASSCE would have equal opportunities for assessment.
“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are advised to disregard the misleading reports and rely solely on official communications from the Council for accurate information regarding examination guidelines for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” the statement concluded.
