The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has revealed that 3,915 persons lost their lives in 7,715 road crashes recorded across Nigeria between January and September 2025.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this on Thursday during the National Town Hall Meeting and Ember Months Road Safety Campaign flag-off held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety; Stop Distracted Driving.”
Mohammed said the data reflects an increase in both crashes and fatalities compared to figures recorded within the same period in 2024.
“Crash statistics recorded between January and September 2025 nationwide showed that a total of 7,715 road traffic crashes occurred, representing a 10.04 per cent rise compared to 7,011 crashes recorded within the same period in 2024. Again, 24,674 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, compared to 22,373 injured in 2024.
This also reflects a 10.28 per cent increase. Also, 3,915 persons were killed in 2025 as against 3,811 in 2024, indicating an increase of 11.55 per cent,” Mohammed said.
He, however, noted that Rivers State recorded a decline in fatalities and injuries, with 15 deaths and 51 injuries in 47 crashes, representing a 35.7% reduction in deaths and 37.5% drop in injuries compared to 2024 figures.
Mohammed attributed the improvement in Rivers to enhanced emergency response and increased safety awareness.
He warned that the national figures serve as an “alarming reminder” of the devastating impact of road crashes on families, communities, and the nation’s economy, urging motorists to exercise caution, discipline, and vigilance while driving.
The FRSC boss explained that the choice of Rivers State for the 2025 Ember Months Campaign flag-off was strategic, given its position as one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors.
He added that the Corps has expanded public enlightenment, strengthened proactive interventions, and deployed technology to enhance road safety management ahead of the festive season.
Representing the state governor, Siminialayi Fubara, the Secretary to the State Government, Benibo Anabraba, cautioned motorists and boat operators against speeding, drink-driving, and negligence, noting that many accidents persist despite the government’s investment in road infrastructure.
Fubara urged transport unions, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Maritime Workers Union, to intensify sensitisation of their members to ensure a safe festive season for all road users.
