NDLEA GETS CONTINUITY AS TINUBU REAPPOINTS BUBA MARWA
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended the appointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for an additional five-year term.
Marwa was initially designated by President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021, subsequent to his service as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to December 2020.
As per a communication from the Special Adviser to the President on Media, Bayo Onanuga, this reappointment signifies that the Adamawa-born former military officer will continue to lead the NDLEA until 2031.
A former military governor of both Lagos and Borno States, Marwa is a graduate of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).
Commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1973, he fulfilled various roles, including Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to then Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Theophilus Danjuma, and Registrar of the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Marwa also undertook diplomatic defence positions, serving as Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D. C., and subsequently as Defence Adviser to Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
He possesses two postgraduate qualifications: a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh (1983–85) and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University (1985–86).
Under his stewardship, the NDLEA has achieved significant milestones, including the apprehension of over 73,000 drug traffickers and dealers, alongside the confiscation of more than 15 million kilograms of various illicit substances. The agency has also ramped up nationwide initiatives against drug abuse.
“Your reappointment is a testament to your dedicated efforts to free our nation from the scourge of drug trafficking and abuse. I encourage you to remain steadfast in pursuing the traffickers of harmful substances who seek to harm our citizens, particularly the youth,” President Tinubu remarked.
