President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reappointed Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for another five-year term.
The announcement, conveyed in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, extends Marwa’s leadership of the agency until 2031.
Marwa, first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021, previously served as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse (2018–2020). His renewed tenure follows what the Presidency described as a period of impactful reforms and intensified drug-control operations.
A former military governor of Lagos and Borno States, Marwa is a graduate of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy. Commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1973, he went on to serve in key military roles, including brigade major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to then Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant-General Theophilus Danjuma, academic registrar of the NDA, and Defence Adviser roles in Washington, DC, and at the Nigerian Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
He holds two postgraduate degrees — a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.
Under Marwa’s leadership, the NDLEA has recorded major breakthroughs, including the arrests of more than 73,000 drug traffickers and cartels, as well as seizures exceeding 15 million kilogrammes of illicit substances. The agency has also intensified nationwide anti-drug campaigns targeting abuse and trafficking.
President Tinubu, praising Marwa’s performance, described the reappointment as “a vote of confidence in your onerous efforts to rid our country of the menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse,” urging him to continue pursuing drug barons and protect Nigerian youths from narcotics.
The reappointment takes effect immediately.
