PARENTAL NEGLECT DRIVING EDUCATION DECLINE

The significance of parental involvement, in addition to that of educators and government officials, has been recognized as essential for enhancing the quality of education in Nigeria.

This conclusion was reached during a press conference convened on Thursday in anticipation of the 30th anniversary festivities of Trinity International College, Ofada, Ogun State, set to take place from November 21 to 23, 2025.

Members of the school’s governing board and board of trustees articulated their concerns regarding what they termed parental indifference toward their children’s academic and ethical growth.

While addressing attendees, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Trinity Group, Mr. Samuel Olatunji, emphasized that families must assume their responsibilities in shaping children who are well-rounded in both character and scholarship.

Olatunji stated, “We often hold the government accountable for numerous issues in the country; unquestionably, the government has a role in providing direction. However, the familial component is equally vital to educational quality. Some parents do not even recall the date their children return to school, much less ensure that they have completed their assignments. There are instances where parents confront teachers over correctional actions taken toward their children.

“Thus, the role of the home is extremely significant. While they enroll their children in school, how prepared are the children for their educational journey? ”

To elevate the nation’s educational standards, he highlighted that educators must receive adequate motivation to fulfill their responsibilities, while school infrastructure should be repaired and the curriculum revised.

Additionally, Mr. Bayo Kolade, Chairman of the Board of Governors at Trinity International College, remarked that schools are increasingly compelled to address the detrimental effects of inadequate parental guidance.

Kolade noted, “If one were to hear accounts regarding the deterioration in certain households, it would evoke sorrow for Nigeria. The level of neglect prevalent in some homes raises questions about why certain individuals have been entrusted with children.

“We admitted a ten-year-old student who had already engaged in self-stimulation at home. We monitored and ultimately expelled this individual. When instances of bullying are observed, we investigate, and should they escalate, we intervene. There have even been cases where we have had to expel a student preparing for the Senior School Certificate Examination. ”

Mrs. Rebecca Adeyemo, the Director of Education at Trinity International College, reiterated the institution’s dedication to delivering “superior education for future leaders by merging academic excellence with ethical and spiritual integrity. ”

She mentioned, “Our objective to be a premier educational entity recognized for academic superiority and robust Christian principles continues to inform every decision, each classroom interaction, and every collaboration we pursue. ”

In revealing the anniversary agenda, Mr. Austin Omame, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, announced that the Vice-Chancellor of Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo, Prof. Lanre Olaniyan, will present the anniversary lecture titled, “Reimagining Education for a New Generation: Strategies for Fostering Lifelong Learners. ”

He added that the celebration will include award ceremonies honoring distinguished alumni and staff, a thanksgiving service, and a community service initiative at the Ofada Health Centre.
Additional participants of the board and administration in attendance at the occasion included Mr. Adedayo Oluranti, Mrs. Adedayo Oluranti, and Mrs. Grace Adepoju.
