Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, have commended Nigeria’s Super Eagles following their 4-1 triumph over Gabon in the 2026 CAF World Cup qualifiers.

The encounter, held at the Moulay Hassan Stadium on Thursday, witnessed Nigeria secure a spot in the final World Cup playoffs with contributions from Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke, and a double from Victor Osimhen.

In the aftermath of the match, supporters took to social media to celebrate the success and encouraged the team to maintain their concentration in anticipation of their upcoming match against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday.

On his official X profile on Thursday night, Abubakar expressed his pride in the team.

“I am proud of the @NGSuperEagles for providing Nigeria a fighting chance in the 2026 World Cup Africa playoff final. -AA,” Abubakar stated.

Meanwhile, Obi remarked that the team’s performance underscores the significance of investing in talent.

“After a hectic schedule that took me from Lagos to Abuja for the Guild of Editors event, and then on to Anambra, I still ensured to follow the Super Eagles match against Gabon.

“My exhilaration after the match from the delightful victory caused me to neglect my immediate tweet, as I typically do following each of their matches.

“I sincerely congratulate our esteemed Super Eagles on their exceptional and well-earned victory today.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate emphasized that the Super Eagles’ display serves as a reminder that “when we invest in talent and support our institutions, Nigeria can vie and succeed on any global platform. ”

“Today, the Super Eagles have made us proud, and I celebrate them, the coaching staff, and every Nigerian who continues to believe in the potential for a better, stronger, and more united Nigeria.

“Excellent work, Eagles. Keep soaring,” Obi remarked.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar also acknowledged the team for their discipline.

“Congratulations to our national team @NGSuperEagles on their remarkable 4–1 comeback victory over Gabon to secure a place in the final playoff.

“Well done to the team for maintaining discipline and concluding strongly,” Tuggar stated.

Another X user, Joshua Sogunle, praised the team’s overall performance.

“It’s been a long time since I witnessed the Super Eagles of Nigeria play this well. Determination, dribbling, passing accuracy, technical proficiency—just remarkable control of the game.

“We wouldn’t be contesting in the playoffs if we had performed half as well during the qualifiers.

“As I watch the Super Eagles today, I find myself unfazed by European football. I wouldn’t have believed African football could be this captivating to observe.

“The team should stay focused; we have challenges ahead,” he expressed.

The victor of the match between Nigeria and DR Congo will qualify for a six-nation FIFA intercontinental tournament in March.
