OHANAEZE YOUTHS SUPPORT TINUBU’S PUSH FOR EKWEREMADU’S RETURN
The youth faction of the principal Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has characterized the recent endeavor of the Nigerian Government towards the liberation of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, as uplifting.
The organization recalled that, despite multiple appeals to former President Muhammadu Buhari for intervention in Ekweremadu’s predicament, the prior administration displayed a lack of interest.
In a declaration, the National President of Ohanaeze Youths, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, expressed that it was comforting that President Bola Tinubu’s administration had undertaken measures to facilitate Ekweremadu’s potential repatriation to Nigeria.
He remarked that it was gratifying that President Bola Tinubu’s government has advanced toward enabling the return of Ekweremadu to Nigeria.
It is noteworthy that President Tinubu’s delegation, led by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, initiated discussions with the authorities in the United Kingdom (UK) regarding the possibility of arranging Ekweremadu’s transfer to Nigeria to serve the remainder of his prison sentence.
Okwu stated, “This singular action by the President Bola Tinubu administration further solidifies his commitment to the Igbo people. President Bola Tinubu has consistently undertaken efforts for Ndigbo that the former administration intentionally neglected. ”
The president of Ohanaeze youth, who also commended the appointment of another Igbo individual as one of the service chiefs, implored the Tinubu administration to expedite the process of Ekweremadu’s return to Nigeria.
“Ndigbo express their gratitude to Mr. President for initiating this action; this solitary gesture and numerous others will always be appreciated. We urge the government, having initiated the process, to ensure its successful completion,” Okwu remarked.
In other developments, in anticipation of the 2027 general elections, members of the 1st to 8th Delta State House of Assembly—both current and former—enthusiastically endorsed President Ahmed Bola Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as their exclusive candidates for the upcoming presidential and gubernatorial elections.
The endorsement, made during a special session in Asaba, was presided over by the Speaker of the 8th Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, and was accompanied by a vote of “implicit confidence” in both leaders.
The motion to endorse Tinubu and Oborevwori as sole candidates was proposed by Rt. Hon. Halims Agoda, a member of the 1st Assembly and former federal legislator, and seconded by Hon. Kris Njokwuemeni of the 2nd Assembly.
It received unanimous approval from attendees, comprising legislators commonly referred to as “Non-Sitting Members. ”
The endorsement highlighted the climax of the inaugural Delta State House of Assembly Speaker’s Annual Leadership Series, themed “Leadership Dynamics in the Delta State House of Assembly: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow. ”
In his keynote address, Speaker Guwor underscored the importance of “harmonious consensus” within the Legislature, suggesting that unity among legislators is vital for inclusive governance.
“This moment is significant because every Assembly represented here today, from the First Assembly of 1992 to the Seventh Assembly that preceded ours, has made substantial contributions to shaping the democratic trajectory of Delta State,” he stated.
Numerous former legislators, including Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, Frank Enekorogha, Emmanuel Okoro, Basil Ganagana, Ovie Agas, Funkekeme Solomon, Orezi Esievo, Anthony Elekeokwuri, and Johnson Erijo, commended Speaker Guwor for organizing the assembly.
They contended that the gathering would enhance political cohesion and provide a platform for mutual understanding between former and current lawmakers.
Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo, who presided over the planning committee, praised the session as a pioneering event in Nigeria. He expressed appreciation for the members’ participation and camaraderie, describing the occasion as “evergreen. ”
