STRIKE ACTION: PARLIAMENTARY STAFF SEAL OFF BAUCHI ASSEMBLY COMPLEX
Legislative activities have been halted at the Bauchi State House of Assembly due to a nationwide protest initiated by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria.
The employees ceased work to advocate for financial independence for state legislatures.
The chairman of the association in the state, Mr. Adamu Yusuf, made this announcement on Friday in Bauchi.
He stated that their members participated in the strike in adherence to the directives issued by the national leadership of the association.
He indicated that this initiative aims to urge the Federal Government to enforce the Financial Autonomy Act, a crucial measure towards enhancing parliamentary independence and advancing democratic governance.
“PASAN has undertaken various strikes in the past to demand the enforcement of this legislation, yet the Federal Government has not fully executed it,” he remarked.
According to Yusuf, the industrial action represents a united stance by the state branches of the association to amplify pressure for the long-awaited reform.
He noted that the workers initiated the strike as a final measure after exhausting all possibilities for discussions and negotiations with the pertinent government authorities.
Yusuf, however, praised Gov. Bala Mohammed for his dedication to securing financial autonomy for the state legislature.
“This is a praiseworthy initiative that corresponds with the broader national call for legislative independence,” he stated.
PASAN functions as the labor union representing employees within Nigeria’s legislative sectors, encompassing staff of state Houses of Assembly and the National Assembly.
The union frequently orchestrates industrial actions to advocate for improved working conditions—such as the implementation of the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS), disbursement of outstanding allowances, and the establishment of legislative service commissions—while demanding complete financial and administrative independence for state legislatures.
In recent years, PASAN has conducted several nationwide or multi-state strikes that have paralyzed state assemblies, with its actions often linked to enforcing constitutional provisions regarding legislative autonomy and enhancing the welfare of parliamentary staff.
