The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised alarm over what he described as an “unprecedented wave of negative developments” across Nigeria in the last 10 days, attributing the situation to “collective leadership failures.”

In a statement issued on Monday, Obi cautioned that Nigeria is sliding into “avoidable disorder” fueled by worsening insecurity, rising lawlessness, and deepening institutional collapse.

He stated:
“In the past 10 days, Nigeria has witnessed an extraordinary surge in disturbing news   a degree of chaos, insecurity, and institutional deterioration that should weigh heavily on the conscience of every leader.

“Our nation is facing difficult times, not by coincidence, but because of our collective leadership failures that have allowed insecurity, impunity, and institutional decay to flourish.”

“Every new day brings yet another tragedy, a fresh reminder that our country is drifting in the absence of competent, compassionate, responsive, and responsible leadership.

“We are witnessing a nation endowed with resilient and capable people slide into chaos that could have been prevented,” he said.

Obi went on to highlight a string of violent incidents across the country, including the killing of a Brigadier General, the abduction of 64 civilians in Zamfara, the kidnapping of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi, the attack on worshippers in Kwara, and the abduction of more than 300 students and teachers in Niger State, among others.

Obi also referenced the latest attack on female farmers in Borno, saying, “I received yet another heartbreaking report that 13 female farmers were abducted today in Askira-Uba LGA of Borno State by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists.”

The former presidential candidate further cautioned, “No serious nation survives on excuses, indifference, or absentee leadership. Nigeria is bleeding because those elected to protect the nation have chosen comfort over courage, politics over people, and power over purpose.”

He urged the country’s political leaders to embrace competence, compassion, and accountability, noting that “governance is not a title it is a duty to safeguard every child, every community, and every citizen. What we need is competent and compassionate leadership that shows up when it matters most.”

“To every Nigerian distressed by the events of the past 10 days, my heart goes out to you. You deserve safety. You deserve peace. Nigeria must rise again,” he added.
