PDP LEADERSHIP APPEALS TO SULE LAMIDO FOR PARTY UNITY

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged former Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, to calm tensions and back current moves aimed at restoring stability within the party.
The appeal comes after Lamido, in a recent interview with BBC Hausa, criticised the party’s approach to its leadership crisis and referenced a lawsuit he filed over the issue.
Umar Sani, a close ally of PDP National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), said several of Lamido’s claims in the interview were misleading and needed clarification.
Sani explained that, contrary to Lamido’s assertion that the party defied a court order during its national convention, no court ruling stopped the PDP from conducting the exercise. He noted that the court merely directed the party to allow Lamido to contest after proper verification—an order the PDP has since challenged at the Supreme Court.
He further revealed that another court in Ibadan had expressly authorised the PDP to proceed with the convention, which resulted in the emergence of new national officers countering Lamido’s claim that the party currently lacks legitimate leadership.
Sani urged the former governor to act with maturity and prioritise the unity of the party over personal grievances.
“Sule Lamido is one of the PDP’s founding pillars. At a time like this, the party needs cohesion, not endless litigation,” he said. “If we continue to remain entangled in court cases, victory will keep slipping away.”
The PDP leadership encouraged Lamido to cooperate with Chairman Turaki, stressing that both men have shared a long-standing cordial relationship and can still work together to steer the party away from internal turbulence.
The appeal comes as the PDP faces growing internal tensions and heightened criticism over its handling of recent electoral and administrative challenges.
