The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into the conduct of a police officer seen in a viral social media video attempting to arrest a bus conductor who reportedly stripped himself naked to resist arrest.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the incident occurred during efforts to apprehend the conductor and driver of a commercial bus accused of unlawfully obstructing police officers and LASTMA officials while carrying out their lawful duties in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
According to the police, the driver had deliberately positioned the bus in a manner that blocked traffic, causing gridlock and subjecting commuters to “serious untold hardship.” During the attempt to arrest the conductor, he allegedly turned violent and removed his clothes to avoid being detained an action captured in the viral video.
Although the police acknowledged the misconduct of the conductor, SP Adebisi stated that the officer involved in the arrest has been identified and is now under investigation to assess the appropriateness of his actions. The conductor has also been contacted to appear before the Commissioner of Police on Monday.
“The outcome of the investigation will be made public,” the statement assured, adding that the commercial bus has been impounded for further inquiry.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, urged residents to remain law-abiding and report any violation of their rights by police personnel, giving assurances that such complaints would be addressed impartially.
He warned, however, against sensationalism targeted at police officers carrying out lawful duties, stressing that resisting arrest is a criminal offence.
“The Lagos State Police Command remains committed to ensuring transparency and accountability, and this matter will be thoroughly investigated to ensure justice is served,” the statement concluded.
