The University of Cross River State (UniCross) has rejected claims of manipulating graduating students’ results, attributing reported discrepancies to the ongoing transfer of examination data from its old portal to a new, upgraded system.

Addressing the concerns at the NUJ Press Centre in Calabar, university management responded to questions from staff, students, and the public regarding the results and graduation process.

Dr. Anderson Etika, Director of Examinations and Results, explained that when Vice-Chancellor Professor Francesca Bassey assumed office in January last year, she initiated the shift to a modern results management system.

“When she arrived, the university was midway through transitioning from the old portal to the new system,” Etika said. “She aimed to fast-track the process, but we faced challenges, particularly in linking data from the old portal to the new system. There were also unresolved financial issues with the old portal before it was decommissioned.”

Etika added that management undertook a massive effort to retrieve hard copies of results from all departments over the past 20 years, amounting to over five million records.

“To prioritize graduating students, we focused on uploading results from the 2017–2018 to 2022–2023 sessions to the new portal, completing this within two months,” he said.

He acknowledged that transferring data between entirely different systems could lead to minor discrepancies.

“Given the scale and complexity of the task, some inconsistencies were inevitable. However, management has nearly resolved all observed issues,” Etika assured.

He added, “This process has enabled us to significantly improve result administration moving forward.”
