A 300-level student of the Department of Computer Science at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), Niger State, Kelvin Danlami, has reportedly died by suicide following an alleged loss of ₦600,000 to betting.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday, saying the student was found hanging in his room with a cloth tied to a ceiling fan.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, the incident occurred in the early hours of January 19, 2026.
“On 19/1/26 at about 10:30 a.m., information was received that one Kelvin Danlami, a student of IBBUL, was found to have hanged himself in his room with a cloth tied to the ceiling fan,” Abiodun said.
He explained that the situation was discovered by a neighbour who raised the alarm, after which the student was rushed to the General Hospital, Lapai, where he was confirmed dead.
“Police operatives attached to Lapai Division visited the scene, conducted a preliminary investigation and contacted the family of the deceased. Further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the reason for such action,” the statement added.
There are unconfirmed reports that the sum of ₦600,000, allegedly lost to gambling, had been entrusted to the student for house rent by a landlord. However, authorities have not officially established the circumstances surrounding the money.
Reacting to the incident, the university management distanced itself from any alleged financial dealings involving the deceased. In a statement, the Deputy Registrar (Information), Baba Akote, said the institution was not aware of any rental or financial transaction between the student and a purported landlord.
“The University wishes to state clearly that it is not aware of, and was not a party to any financial or rental transaction between the deceased student and the landlord in question,” the statement read.

The management described the matter as a private arrangement outside the academic and administrative operations of the university, while cautioning against speculation and the spread of unverified information.
“While awaiting the outcome of a thorough investigation by the relevant security agencies, the University Management urges restraint to avoid further traumatising the family, friends and the university community,” the statement added.
The institution also advised students to be mindful of activities that could expose them to financial, legal or psychological distress, and pledged full cooperation with security agencies investigating the incident.
