The Abia State Government has announced that demolition and reconstruction work at the Abia State College of Health Sciences and Management Technology, Aba, will begin within the week as part of its ongoing initiative to overhaul state-owned tertiary institutions.

The announcement was made in a statement on Monday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Njoku Ukoha.

According to the statement, many of the college’s buildings, described as “over 70 years old” and in a “dilapidated” condition, will be demolished and rebuilt to provide an improved learning environment for students.

“A few days ago, I highlighted the current dilapidated state of the Abia State College of Health Sciences and Management Technology, Aba,” Ukoha said.

He explained that the project is part of Governor Alex Otti’s broader commitment to rehabilitate and modernise all state-owned tertiary institutions across Abia State.

“As part of Governor Otti’s pledge to recover and remodel state-owned tertiary institutions, demolition will begin on-site within the week. Most of the college’s over 70-year-old dilapidated structures, left in ruins by previous administrations, will be reconstructed to create a better learning environment for students,” the statement read.

Ukoha added that visual prototypes of the proposed structures have been released to give the public an idea of how the college will look after completion.

“Behold! The prototype of the college when completed,” he said.

The statement also highlighted other ongoing transformations in the state’s tertiary institutions under the Otti administration.

According to Ukoha, the Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, has been fully transformed, while Abia State University, Uturu, is undergoing extensive rehabilitation, reconstruction, and construction.

He further noted that Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, has seen major upgrades to its temporary site, while its permanent site is under substantial construction in preparation for relocation. Additionally, the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, is undergoing significant construction and upgrading.

Ukoha emphasised that the redevelopment of the College of Health Sciences, Aba, is part of the government’s wider effort to reverse years of neglect in the education sector and reposition public institutions for improved academic standards and service delivery.
