All Progressives Congress (APC) flags were on Monday hoisted at the Kano State Government House, marking the formal return of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the ruling party.
The development comes days after Yusuf announced his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), ending months of political speculation and realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor, who is expected to officially register as an APC member on Monday, will be joined by key political office holders across the state, including 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and the 44 local government chairmen.
Yusuf was a central figure in the NNPP’s victory in Kano during the 2023 elections but has cited governance realities, national cohesion, and the need for closer collaboration with the Federal Government as reasons for his defection. He had previously been a member of the APC between 2014 and 2018 before moving to other political platforms.
Preparations are underway for the governor’s formal reception into the APC, with party sources confirming that the national leader of the party, Abdullahi Ganduje, is expected to return from London on Monday to receive him in Kano.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, said Yusuf’s decision to return to the APC was guided by prevailing governance challenges and the desire to accelerate development in the state.
The statement added that Governor Yusuf is also expected to officially flag off the APC electronic registration exercise in Kano on Monday, further consolidating his return to the ruling party.
