The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has introduced a new electric transport system at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, in a major move toward cleaner and more efficient airport operations, with plans to expand the initiative nationwide.
The programme, unveiled on Thursday, features the deployment of more than 30 electric vehicles—comprising 10 electric shuttle buses and 20 electric saloon cars—to support airside and landside operations, staff mobility, and passenger coordination.
Speaking at the launch, Chairman of the FAAN Governing Board, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, described the initiative as a significant milestone in the authority’s efforts to modernise airport logistics and align Nigeria’s aviation sector with global standards.
According to him, the introduction of electric vehicles will improve operational efficiency while delivering substantial environmental benefits.
“Electric vehicles are cleaner, quieter and more energy-efficient. They reduce carbon emissions, enhance the airport environment and offer a more comfortable experience for staff and passengers,” Ganduje said.
He added that the predictable performance and reduced maintenance requirements of electric vehicles would strengthen monitoring, coordination and accountability, ultimately improving service delivery and passenger satisfaction.
Ganduje also noted that the initiative supports global sustainability goals, including the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
He assured that the FAAN Board would ensure the programme is properly maintained and gradually extended to airports across the country, describing the Abuja rollout as the foundation of a more resilient and modern airport transport system.
In her welcome address, FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, said the project reflects the authority’s commitment to innovation and strategic private-sector partnerships.
She explained that such collaborations had already yielded results, pointing to the Go-Cashless Initiative, which has automated FAAN’s payment systems, improved revenue efficiency and reduced leakages.
“This initiative is about transparency, accountability and enhancing the passenger experience from the very first point of contact,” Kuku said.
She disclosed that FAAN has received approval to deploy 100 electric shuttle vehicles at both the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, noting that the Abuja launch represents the first phase with 10 modern electric buses.
Kuku added that improving surface access to airports remains a priority, explaining that the Nigerian-manufactured NEV T6 electric buses would make airport transportation cleaner, quieter and more efficient.
She further revealed plans to scale clean-energy solutions across FAAN’s airports, including electric vehicles and solar power infrastructure, positioning the authority as a leader in sustainable aviation management in Africa.
Meanwhile, Head of Flight Operations at Possible EVS, Abimbola Gaya, said the company, in partnership with Zuiid Electric, would operate zero-emission shuttle services between the airport and the city centre.
She said the service would run daily from 7am to 7pm at a fare of ₦10,000 per passenger, offering reliable airport transportation while promoting environmentally friendly mobility.
