MAN CHARGED AFTER POSING AS FBI AGENT TO FREE MURDER SUSPECT IN NEW YORK JAIL
Agency Report

A 36-year-old man, Mark Anderson, was charged Thursday for allegedly impersonating an FBI agent at a New York jail in an attempt to secure the release of Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the high-profile murder of health insurance executive Brian Thompson.
Anderson was arrested late Wednesday at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn after prison staff asked for his credentials. He reportedly presented only a driver’s license and claimed to be armed. Authorities discovered a large barbecue fork and a round steel blade resembling a pizza cutter in his backpack, court filings show.
According to the criminal complaint, Anderson told staff he had paperwork “signed by a judge” authorizing the release of a specific inmate, later confirmed to be Mangione.
Mangione, 27, is accused of gunning down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024, a killing captured on surveillance footage that sparked nationwide outrage over the country’s private healthcare system.
The suspect faces both federal and state charges and has pleaded not guilty in both cases. His federal trial is scheduled to begin with jury selection on September 8, while a date for the state proceedings has yet to be set.
