Manchester United stretched their perfect start under interim manager Michael Carrick to four games with a 2-0 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United took full advantage of Tottenham captain Cristian Romero’s early red card to dominate the match, ending an eight-game winless run against Spurs. Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring, followed by Bruno Fernandes’ late strike, securing the points for the Red Devils.

The win moves Manchester United within two points of third-placed Aston Villa and five points clear of sixth-placed Liverpool. A top-five finish could see them return to the Champions League next season, thanks to the strong performance of English clubs in European competitions.

Tottenham, meanwhile, remain 14th in the league, with their hopes of Champions League qualification now all but over. Romero’s red card came in the 29th minute after a reckless lunge on Casemiro, marking his second dismissal of the season and sixth in his Spurs career. He now faces a four-match suspension.

The incident comes days after Romero publicly criticised the club’s management on social media, prompting internal disciplinary action from manager Thomas Frank.

United dominated despite Tottenham’s resistance, with Mbeumo scoring his third goal in four games under Carrick after a clever set-piece involving Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo. Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha had goals ruled out for offside before Fernandes sealed the win nine minutes from time, prodding in Diogo Dalot’s cross to mark his 200th goal or assist in 314 appearances for the club.

Carrick, who has overseen a remarkable turnaround since Ruben Amorim’s departure last month, stressed that United cannot rush the appointment of a permanent manager but is making a strong case to continue leading the team.

This victory underlines Manchester United’s resurgence in form and leaves Spurs facing mounting challenges both on and off the pitch.
