Security operatives have repelled a fresh attack by suspected bandits on Anwase village in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident on Friday. The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, said the attackers were successfully driven out by security personnel, adding that no casualties were recorded among residents or security operatives.

“It is true there was an attack on Anwase, but our gallant officers repelled them and there was no casualty,” Edet said.

However, residents told our correspondent that the assailants stormed the community at about noon on Friday and set several houses ablaze. A local source said some villagers sustained injuries during the invasion before security operatives intervened.

Anwase is a neighbouring community to Abande village, which was attacked on Tuesday by suspected bandits, resulting in the death of six people, including a mobile police officer.

Confirming the incident, a former councillor in the local government, Lawrence Akerigbe, said the swift response of security operatives prevented further loss of lives.

“The attack on Anwase happened at about noon on Friday. The invaders burnt down about 11 houses. Some people were injured, but security operatives deployed to Abande after the earlier attack were on patrol when they encountered the bandits,” Akerigbe said.

He explained that the attackers fled immediately after sighting the security personnel, which brought the situation under control.

Repeated attacks by suspected bandits on communities in Kwande LGA have continued to raise serious security concerns among residents. Anwase village was previously attacked on Christmas Day in 2024, when over 28 people were reportedly killed.

Akerigbe lamented the worsening insecurity in the area, claiming that no fewer than 76 people have been killed in the local government over the past two years due to repeated attacks on rural communities.
