A massive fire at Kano’s Singer Market has destroyed properties valued at over N5 billion, impacting more than 1,000 businesses and leaving seven people unaccounted for.

The market chairman, Alhaji Junaid Zakari, told the media on Sunday that the blaze ranks among the worst in the market’s history, with four residential buildings housing small-scale businesses completely razed.

Goods, equipment, and valuables were entirely lost, dealing a severe blow to the livelihoods of hundreds of families. Zakari confirmed that seven individuals remained missing at the time of reporting, and authorities were investigating their whereabouts to determine whether they were alive.

Emergency responders and security agencies are actively working to uncover the cause of the fire. Zakari called the incident a tragedy that would never be forgotten and stressed the urgent need for support to help affected traders rebuild their businesses.

He praised Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for visiting the scene while the fire was still ongoing, describing the Governor’s swift response as a show of concern and solidarity with victims.

The official cause of the inferno has yet to be determined, with traders continuing to salvage what remains of their properties.

Shop owner Alhaji Isa Abubakar said he lost goods worth over N200 million, remarking, “From God we come; to Him we shall return. It is heartbreaking to see goods worth billions of Naira destroyed by fire.” He also commended Governor Yusuf for his visit.

Another trader, Musa Ibrahim, reported losses exceeding N340 million, pointing to the charred remains of his shop and saying, “The fire consumed everything we had.”
