ELECTRICITY: PETER OBI CRITICIZES BOLA TINUBU OVER UNFULFILLED PROMISES

Peter Obi has strongly criticized Bola Tinubu over what he calls unfulfilled campaign promises, particularly regarding electricity provision.
In a statement shared on his verified X account on Monday, Obi reminded Nigerians of Tinubu’s pledge that they should not re-elect him for a second term if he failed to deliver reliable power. He noted that thirty-two months into office, the national grid has continued to underperform, and the president has abandoned his earlier assurances.
Obi emphasized that while Nigerians do not demand perfect fulfillment of promises, they do expect committed effort, tangible improvements, and transparency when challenges arise. He added that leadership must serve the people rather than distance itself from their daily struggles.
The former Anambra State governor, also a leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), criticized what he called “gross neglect” of the national grid by those in power. He argued that government institutions should be leading initiatives to strengthen and expand electricity infrastructure, ensuring reliable power reaches citizens and other establishments.
Obi questioned the disconnect between leadership and ordinary Nigerians, asking, “If those in authority disconnect themselves from the system, who then will connect the ordinary Nigerian to reliable power?”
He recalled that Tinubu’s previous statements had raised hope for stable electricity in homes, businesses, and across the nation. Yet, while citizens continue to struggle with an underperforming grid and unclear explanations for the shortfall, Obi highlighted recent budgetary provisions allocating billions of naira to solar power at Aso Rock and upgrades for 2026. He criticized the apparent plan for the Presidential Villa to rely entirely on solar energy, calling it symbolic of governance that lacks compassion and commitment to the people.
“Promoting renewable energy is commendable and necessary for the future,” Obi wrote, “but you cannot tell the people to fast while feasting yourself, securing yourself while Nigerians remain unsecured.”
