British police have arrested a former senior government official, reportedly Peter Mandelson, amid allegations that he passed confidential government information to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

In a statement on Monday, London’s Metropolitan Police said officers had arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office. In line with British police rules, the statement did not name the suspect before charges were brought, but sources confirmed Mandelson’s identity.

The police said the arrest followed searches of properties in Wiltshire and Camden, north London, and that the former minister was taken to a London police station for formal questioning.

Mandelson, a former Labour Party politician and ex-British Ambassador to the United States, was dismissed from his Washington post in September 2025 after details of his relationship with Epstein emerged. He also resigned from the Labour Party the same day amid ongoing police investigations.

He has not publicly commented on the arrest but previously stated that documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice did not suggest any wrongdoing on his part.

The Metropolitan Police investigation is ongoing, and no charges have yet been filed.
