The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has condemned the recent surge of violence in Zamfara State, calling for enhanced collaboration to curb further bloodshed.

In a statement posted Sunday night on the African Union’s official X account, Youssouf characterized the February 21, 2026 attack in northwestern Nigeria as a brutal and carefully coordinated terrorist assault.

The statement revealed that more than 50 civilians were killed in the violence, with several women and children reportedly abducted.

The AU reiterated its firm opposition to terrorism and violent extremism in any form, particularly acts targeting innocent civilians. It emphasized that attacks on vulnerable groups, including women and children, constitute grave human rights violations and pose significant threats to peace, security, and stability.

“The African Union unequivocally rejects all acts of terrorism and violent extremism against civilian populations, particularly women and children, as grave violations of human rights and serious threats to peace, security, and stability,” the statement read.

Youssouf also conveyed the AU’s solidarity with Nigeria during this challenging time, offering condolences to the families of the victims and wishing those injured a swift recovery.

The AU Chairperson further reaffirmed the Union’s unwavering support for Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity and restore sustainable peace in affected communities.

He called for the immediate, safe, and unconditional release of all abducted women and children, urging the perpetrators to free them without harm.

He also emphasized the need for strengthened cooperation and well-coordinated measures to protect civilians and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

The statement noted that the appeal underscores the African Union’s enduring commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability across the continent.
