German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping during an official visit to China from February 25 to 26, following an invitation from Premier Li Qiang of the State Council.
During the visit, Merz will hold talks with both Xi and Li on bilateral relations and areas of mutual interest, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced at a briefing on Tuesday.
Spokesperson Mao Ning described China and Germany as “all-round strategic partners,” highlighting that their mutually beneficial relationship has “produced tangible results for both peoples.”
Beijing emphasized that, as the world’s second- and third-largest economies, China and Germany maintain close high-level exchanges and continue to deepen practical cooperation. Ning noted that the “sound development” of their ties benefits both nations and “is what the world expects to see.”

Merz’s trip marks his first visit to China since taking office in May 2025 and follows two recent visits by European leaders: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who visited Beijing in January.
Germany and China established diplomatic relations in 1972. Despite the multifaceted and dynamic nature of their ties, China regards Germany as a key partner in Europe, both politically and economically.
Germany’s approach to China is guided by the Federal Government Strategy on China, adopted in 2023, which frames the relationship as both cooperative and competitive.
China was Germany’s largest trading partner for goods from 2016 to 2023 and the second-largest in 2024, with trade volume reaching approximately €245 billion.
