Justice Maryam Sabo of the Kano State High Court in Kano has sentenced Ebonine Rita Uzoamaka to seven years’ imprisonment for obtaining N5,600,000 (Five Million, Six Hundred Thousand Naira) by false pretence.

Uzoamaka was arraigned on August 18, 2021, facing five counts of fraudulent misappropriation of funds totaling N5,660,000 (Five Million, Six Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira).

One of the charges stated: “That you, Ebonine Rita Uzoamaka, on 18th January 2021 at Kano, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, with intent to defraud, obtained N2,000,000 (Two Million Naira) from Ochayi Anthony Eneche, which you caused to be paid into your Access Bank Plc account number 0093030293 under the false pretense that you had 500 cartons of D-Rich Baking Powder to sell, knowing the claim was false, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”

Uzoamaka initially pleaded “not guilty,” prompting a full trial. During proceedings, prosecution counsel Salihu Sani called four witnesses and presented multiple documents, all admitted as evidence. The defendant testified on her own behalf.

Delivering judgment, Justice Sabo found Uzoamaka guilty on all five counts and sentenced her to seven years imprisonment, with an alternative option to pay a fine of N500,000.

The convict was arrested for obtaining N5.6 million from her victim under the pretense of supplying D-Rich Baking Powder from Aba, Abia State. Instead of delivering the goods, she converted the funds for personal use, leading to her prosecution and subsequent conviction.
