EPL: CHELSEA, WEST HAM FINED £625,000 AFTER LATE-GAME BRAWL

Chelsea have been fined £325,000 and West Ham £300,000 following a “mass confrontation” during their Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge in January.
The incident occurred in stoppage time after Chelsea forward João Pedro reacted to a shove from West Ham winger Adama Traoré on Blues defender Marc Cucurella.
Players from both teams became involved in heated exchanges, and referee Anthony Taylor eventually sent off Hammers defender Jean-Clair Todibo after a lengthy VAR review for grabbing João Pedro by the neck.
According to BBC Sport, the Football Association stated on Wednesday: “It was alleged that Chelsea FC failed to ensure its players did not behave in an improper and/or provocative manner around the 95th minute.”
“It was also alleged that West Ham United FC failed to ensure its players refrained from behaving in an improper, provocative, or violent manner at the same time.
“Both clubs have since admitted to the charges against them.”
An independent regulatory commission described the incident as “a serious occurrence” involving several Chelsea players.
In its written statement, the commission noted: “It was not accepted that Mr Cucurella was entirely without fault. He was aware of his actions after conceding the corner kick and getting back to his feet, and he appeared to invite a reaction from Mr Traoré. This does not, however, justify Mr Traoré’s disproportionate response, which triggered the mass confrontation.”
The commission added that three Chelsea players were observed “in some way attempting to incite the crowd during and towards the end of the incident,” emphasizing: “There is no justification for this behaviour, regardless of what occurred during the match or the mass confrontation itself.”
While Todibo’s red card was upheld for violent conduct, the commission stated: “It was accepted that no other West Ham United players engaged in violent conduct beyond the actions of Mr Todibo. However, a large number of West Ham players acted in an improper and provocative manner, contributing to what was a serious and unsightly incident.”
Both clubs’ prior breaches of FA Rule E20.1—which prohibits conduct that is “improper, offensive, violent, threatening, abusive, indecent, insulting or provocative”—were taken into consideration when determining the fines.
The confrontation erupted shortly after Chelsea completed a dramatic comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2, with Enzo Fernández scoring an injury-time winner, before tensions boiled over.
