In a statement released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu also extended sympathy to the Nigeria Football Federation, the National Sports Commission, professional colleagues, and football fans nationwide. The President commended Onigbinde’s contributions to grassroots football development and the advancement of football administration in Nigeria. He highlighted the coach’s historic achievement of guiding Nigeria to the final of the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations.

Tinubu said, “The accomplished football manager will be remembered for his discipline, integrity, foresight, and passion for the round-leather game.” He also prayed for the repose of Onigbinde’s soul and comfort for his family.

The Onigbinde family announced his passing on Monday through a statement signed by Bolade Adesuyi.

Onigbinde’s coaching career included leading Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Japan and South Korea. The Super Eagles were eliminated in the group stage following defeats to Argentina (1–0) and Sweden (2–1), and a goalless draw against England.

Earlier, he managed the Green Eagles between 1982 and 1984. In 1984, he led Nigeria to the African Cup of Nations final, where they were defeated 3–1 by Cameroon. Later that year, he coached Shooting Stars Sports Club in Ibadan to the final of the African Cup of Champions Clubs, where they lost to Zamalek SC of Egypt.

After leaving the national team, Onigbinde remained a respected figure in Nigerian football, serving as a technical instructor for both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA.
