Members of the Association of Waste Management Vendors and Recyclers of Nigeria, Ogun State, have praised Governor Dapo Abiodun for approving the appointment of Alhaji Farouk Akintunde as the new Managing Director of the Ogun State Waste Management Agency (OGWAMA).

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, the Secretary of the association, Pastor Segun Adetula, said waste vendors in the state appreciated the governor for selecting a leader with both the people’s interest at heart and the necessary experience to oversee waste management.

Adetula noted that less than a month into his tenure, the new OGWAMA MD had demonstrated strong leadership and a clear understanding of the responsibilities ahead, resulting in the cleanup of refuse that had previously littered major streets across the state.

The association added that its executives had met with Alhaji Akintunde to highlight challenges facing waste vendors in Ogun State, expressing satisfaction that the new MD had “hit the ground running.”

They stated that the appointment of Alhaji Farouk Akintunde as the new OGWAMA MD has further strengthened their confidence in Governor Dapo Abiodun’s leadership, and they pledged to continue supporting the government’s efforts to effectively manage waste in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the association, Pastor Segun Adetula said, “We wish to express our profound gratitude to the Executive Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his timely interventions in resolving issues between our association and the Ogun State Waste Management Agency.

“The appointment of Alhaji Farouk Akintunde on February 18, 2026, to succeed Mr. Abayomi Hunye will significantly enhance the relationship between the state government and our numerous waste vendor members.”

“We are pleased that our meeting with the new MD on March 2, 2026, where we highlighted our concerns, is already yielding results.

“For example, Alhaji Farouk Akintunde has reduced the registration fee from ₦25,000 to ₦5,000, the amount previously paid by members.

“He has also revoked the licences of some unprofessional members who were fraudulently registered and did not comply with the rules, which require a tax clearance certificate for registration or licence renewal.

“The private sector providers (PSPs) are already operational and being paid, which is why we are seeing effective refuse evacuation. We are truly convinced that he is up to the task, and we are here to appreciate the governor for his timely intervention in protecting our members’ livelihoods.”

The association urged Akintunde to urgently establish a task force to monitor the proliferation of unregistered waste vendors who undermine waste management efforts in the state.

They also requested that quarterly meetings be held with the agency to provide a platform for meaningful engagement, review waste management progress, and plan the way forward.
