US President Donald Trump stated that he believes Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is alive but injured.

Trump made the remarks on Thursday during an interview with the media.

Since his appointment by a clerical assembly on Sunday, the Iranian public has not seen the new Supreme Leader.

Reading from a television presenter, Trump commented, “I think he probably is [alive]. I think he is damaged, but I think he’s probably alive in some form, you know.”

Earlier reports from the media noted that in his first statement, Khamenei vowed to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed and urged neighboring countries to shut US military bases on their soil or risk being targeted by Iran.

He also pledged to seek revenge for the deaths of his father, wife, and other relatives lost during the conflict.

The remarks come amid ongoing tensions following US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, which prompted retaliatory strikes by the Islamic Republic against Israel and Gulf nations hosting US bases.
