A gun battle has left three bandits and two vigilantes dead following an attack on Bargaja village in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State in the early hours of Sunday.

A local source said the assailants stormed the community at about 1:30 a.m., approaching through an outskirt route. Some of the attackers reportedly hid in trees near the village cemetery, while others sneaked into a house on the outskirts where vigilantes were stationed, triggering a confrontation.

According to the source, one vigilante was killed at the start of the clash before his colleagues responded with gunfire, killing three of the bandits.

“The attackers later tracked down another vigilante who had taken refuge in a house and killed him,” the source said, identifying the slain vigilantes as Umar Ibrahim and Abubakar Abdullahi.

The bandits were said to have fled the area using a donkey to carry away their dead while abandoning their motorcycles some distance away to avoid being traced.

The attack sparked panic in the community, with some residents attempting to flee, but village leaders, including the district head and the local security commander, stepped in to calm the situation.

Confirming the incident, the Sokoto State Police Command spokesman, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said the police were aware of the attack and the casualties recorded.
